Visuals Are Not Just Decoration
... and why “good enough” visuals
might be what’s holding things back
There comes a point for many business owners when you just feel like your system needs a bit more oomph.
Better communication.
You’ve built something valuable. Your course works. Your membership delivers.
You’ve spent time refining your message, thinking through your structure, developing your content, sometimes for years.
You know what you do works, and you know who it’s for.
And still, something doesn’t quite land.
Nothing is “wrong” or broken as such, but it doesn’t feel as strong as it should.
So much effort, but…
At this stage, most people have invested heavily in their words.
They’ve studied copywriting, refined their messaging, and carefully shaped what they want to say. They’ve thought about structure, SEO, and how to make their content clear and compelling.
And that effort matters. It really does.
But while the message is being carefully crafted, the visual side is often treated as secondary. Something that just needs to look “good enough.”
Colors are chosen because they just feel good. Fonts are picked from whatever was available. Layouts (sometimes even imagery) come directly from templates. Something that was given to you as part of what someone created as an example, not as something intentional and unique to your business.
So while the message has been carefully crafted, the visual layer is often left behind, staying generic (or even someone else’s).
And that creates a disconnect.
Why on earth should I bother with strategic visuals?
Visuals should not be treated as something nice to have. They’re not just decoration.
They are the first thing people encounter, often way before they consciously notice anything else.
We’ve all heard that first impressions matter, but what’s even more important is that you only get to make that first impression once. And in many cases, the visuals you use decide whether your message even gets a chance to be seen, let alone understood.
Visuals hit before words do.
💠 They shape how your message is received (tone, vibe, recognition).
💠They influence whether someone pays attention at all,
💠whether they feel like this is for them, and
💠whether something feels trustworthy.
So much work for mere visuals...
That means your visuals are doing just as much communication as your words.
In many cases (most?), even more.
Small fractures start to show
When the visual layer is not working, even strong messaging struggles to land.
It’s like carefully writing something important and then presenting it in a format that’s difficult to read. Like those CAPTCHA boxes where the letters are twisted and distorted. Imagine reading full paragraphs like that. The content might be good, but the cumbersome experience gets in the way.
This is where the impact becomes visible.
The platform no longer reflects the level of your work. The visuals are still tied to an earlier version of your business.
They might even be based on templates, borrowed ideas from other creators, or personal preferences that haven’t been processed through a strategic messaging lens at the time they were created.
So even as your expertise has evolved, your presentation hasn’t quite followed.
Critical consequences
And that creates hesitation.
You hesitate to send people to your site because it doesn’t fully represent what you do.
It doesn’t communicate the level of your expertise or the client experience you actually provide.
That hesitation becomes a bottleneck. Your hesitation starts to slow your growth.
Because your materials are not actively working for you. They’re just there.
Danger of lazy visuals
Visuals should not be standing on the sidelines looking pretty. They should be doing active work.
They should help the right people recognize themselves in what you’re offering, inviting them in. They should guide them forward, make things easier to understand, easier to navigate, and easier to trust.
When they don’t, your audience starts to feel the struggle.
People might land on your pages and leave before really engaging.
Or they might stay, but get confused trying to find what they need.
Or they might get the wrong impression altogether and end up consuming your time and energy (with struggles you or they shouldn't be engaged in in the first place), instead of you serving your dreamiest clients.
You know the frustration yourself:
Sometimes a page looks beautiful, but the misalignment is obvious the moment you’ve bought the thing. It wasn’t what you expected. What you feel was sold to you.
Other times, you’re genuinely interested, but it’s just too hard to figure out what’s being offered or where to go next. You keep scrolling up and down.
How disappointed and frustrated do you feel when something like this happens?
You don’t want to do this to your people.
That sort of thing deflates trust before it has even had a chance to build. It definitely affects how/if your message lands. It affects whether people move forward enjoying your guidance or drop off.
In fact, it affects your positioning in your market and if anyone is willing to recommend you to anyone else.
